Read this tutorial:

I got this installation procedure from newsgroup (debian/sid):

  1. Installed the MS True Type Fonts via apt-get.
  $ apt-get install msttcorefonts
  1. Install the ttmkfontdir package
  $ apt-get install fttools
  1. Ran ttmkfontdir on the truetype font directory
  $ cd /usr/share/fonts
  $ mkttfdir truetype
  1. Install the true type font server
  $ apt-get install xfstt

Note: if this is already installed you will need to restart the font server.

  1. Verify that the font server was operational
  $ fsinfo -server localhost:7101
  1. Queried the servers font selection
  $ fslsfonts -server localhost:7101
  1. Temporarily added the server to the fontpath
  $ xset fp+ unix/:7101
  1. Verified the fonts were viewable by the Xserver
  $ xlsfonts -fn *ttf*
  1. Permentantly added the ttf font server to the font path added the following line to /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 under the files section:
        FontPath        "tcp/localhost:7101"       # ttf fontserver

Debian now uses defoma for font configuration. See /usr/share/doc/x-ttcidfont-conf for more information.

 $ dpkg-reconfigure x-ttcidfont-conf

to configure font-backend. I'm using xtt.

And Please add these FontPath lines in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

 FontPath "/var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/TrueType"
 FontPath "/var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/CID"
